An order doesn't go from sale to shipment in one step. It passes through people, systems, and sometimes printed pick lists — and every handoff is a chance for it to stall or get missed.
Map the handoffs before fixing them
Before automating anything, it helps to write out exactly what happens to an order between 'placed' and 'shipped' — who touches it, what system or paper it moves through, and where delays usually happen.
Most teams are surprised how many manual steps exist once they're written down.
Automate the handoff, not the judgment
The goal isn't to remove people from the process — it's to remove the manual re-entry and status-chasing between steps.
Orders should move forward automatically once a step is done, with a clear status anyone can check without asking.
- Pick lists generate automatically when an order is confirmed
- Status updates as items are packed, without manual entry
- Anyone can check order status without interrupting warehouse staff
Measure the handoff time, not just the total
Total order-to-ship time matters, but the handoff delays inside it are what you can actually act on.
Track how long orders sit between steps. That's usually where the biggest, cheapest improvements are found.
